Regional Recordings Millennial Thing - Debra Lee - [Slot-1] Philadelphia-to-Roanoke- transplant Debra Lee traveled back to her Philadelphia musical roots to bring an exciting pop rock collection of a dozen of her original compositions. Her sweet voice can be powerfully successful on the rock numbers and equally gentle on the quieter selections. With piano and keyboards as expert instrument of choice. she transcends time in popular music genres with Carole King songwriting of the 70's, Debbie Gibson pop of the 80's, and Tori Amos/ Paula Cole creativity of the 90's all falling within the range Debra's debut release. The background musicianship from the Philadelphia crew is solid and exciting."Renegade" is a catchy rocker with as much power as the Styx song of the same name from 20 years ago, which was also recorded using the same legendary console. Within the liner notes', the console's history is traced to Gary Loizzo of the American Breed who won 13 Grammies for projects he produced on this console including works for Kansas and Bob Seger, along with Styx, making the sound quality of Millennial Thing as superb as compositions and performances. "Clear Blue Ridge Sky" flows gently yet with strong accents of power as a wonderful tribute to our area. The percussive and powerful saxophone work of Richard Orr shines on "Save Herself' as does his flute playing in "Dance of the Devas," sounding as tribal as Lee Oskar of Eric Burdon and War did on "Spill the Wine." The slide guitar playing of Michael Henegan on "If Thoughts are Prayers" brings a Bonnie Raitt feel to the song on top of Rolling Stones "Give Me Shelter" rhythm. "Caribbean Sea" is appropriately gentle and flowing, while the title "Millennial Thing" adds a bit more power. The collection concludes nicely with a simple piano/vocal selection, "Sweet Concerto ." |
